One of these hardware upgrades you can do to speed up computer is by using SSD (Solid State Disk). These are faster, lighter, consume less power and are not prone to the damage caused by dropping or heavy shock as with HDD (normal hard drive). SSD are flash based disk meaning that they do not have any moving parts so are therefore very fast and will improve your current computer's speed.
Another hardware upgrade you can do to speed up computer is to install a dedicated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). By using a dedicated GPU, not only are you going to experience a smoother video processing, (especially if you are gamer or if you do video related work) you will also free some system RAM which is usually shared with a built-in graphics cards. GPU with a 256MB-1GB is highly recommended to those who run Windows Vista or windows 7.
The 3rd upgrade you should do to speed up computer is to install more RAM modules (memory). This is a no-brainer and you should be aware that for a 32 bits operating system you will not be able to use more than 3.5GB of RAM, so if you have 4GB then 512MB will be wasted. Install a 64 Bits operating system which will also speed things up and install as much RAM as possible.
